Europe Music Festivals

Europe is a big place. That kind of goes without saying. But it’s made up of so many small places that bringing those cultures together into one can cause a sensational reaction. And that’s the case with European music festivals- with every country adding a little bit of its own music and its own history to their native festivals, travelling Europe by music is one of the most varied and mind-boggling experiences you’ll have on the continent. When it comes to music, Europe has you covered. Take a look at its history for proof- the Ancient Greeks held some of the first recorded music festivals in history, an idea that spread to the rest of central Europe over the Middle Ages. With gorgeous historical cities like Milan, Berlin, and Paris hosting major festivals, Europe is the place to go if you want to blend your music consumption in with some serious cultureshock. While there are a lot of classical festivals which have been around for decades (more on them later) Europe has emerged as one of the leaders in electronica music in the last decade or so. The Amsterdam Dance Event is a good place to start for those with a more academic interest in the genre, as it’s the world’s biggest conference event on electronica music as well as packing in scores of new live acts, but if that’s not your thing hop across to Mysteryland. Also in the Netherlands, this brings together theatre, art, performance and music into one psychedelic Dutch trip. Germany too has a sterling reputation for EDM music, and this is reflected in a few brilliant festivals- Nature One is a particular standout, with cheap tickets and a mixture of huge and up-and-coming acts. France, Britain, and Iceland are great for EDM fans too, and generally offer a more indie edge to the genre if that’s more your style. And even if you’re not really into all that electronic nonsense, Europe has plenty to offer you in the way of more traditional music. With a long history of producing sensational classical music, Europe has several established classical music festivals for those looking for a classier aural hit. Head to Italy if this sort of thing is for you, as they lay claim to both The Puccini Festival and MITO SettembreMusica- the later of which is an entire month of live music held across piazzas, churches and theatres in Milan and Turin.
