Austin is the home of the State Capitol, and has a firm handle on laid-back charm. It has a chilled-out vibe with a big city look and its music scene continues to thrive and grow. Visitors come here for an abundance of reasons, including an exciting and interesting array of events and festivals throughout the year.
SXSW (or South by Southwest) is probably Texas’ most famous festival, and offers a huge and broad selection of music, films and interaction, from huge names to independent and upcoming acts. There are now around 2,000 musical acts each year, which makes it one of the biggest musical events on the planet. Previous artists have included big names such as Foo Fighters, Lady Gaga and Kanye West. Film offerings include a load of screenings and premieres, and films such as 21 Jump Street, The Cabin in the Woods and Bridesmaids have been seen for the very first time here. Guest speakers have included people such as Lena Dunham, Ryan Gosling and Danny Boyle. It’s impossible to summarise the grandeur and breadth of the festival, but it’s huge, exciting and inspiring, and it’s waiting for you to join in!
BatFest is another big festival, though much more unusual than many other events in the city. Each year, around two million live bats emerge from under a bridge, and the event is celebrated and honoured by live music, arts, crafts, food, drink and bat-related activities. These include a bat-themed costume contest, bat-themed games and competitions and plenty more. It’s a feat of nature and a fest of entertainment, and you won’t find many more unusual attractions
Austin Food and Wine Festival is a haven for foodies and wine fans, with artisanal offerings of tummy-busting snacks, meals, wines and beers. Each year, there are hundreds of food purveyors, dozens of tasting sessions, cooking demonstrations, interactive events, grill-offs, samples and more. There is also live music and entertainment to accompany the tasty treats.
Austin celebrates the many arty and crafty people of the city, with Pecan Street Festivals and Renegade Craft Fair, both of which exhibit and sell the artistic creations of a whole host of sculptors, painters, artists, makers and creators.
Throughout the city, there are also chances to indulge in sports events, Christmas festivities, and other festivals offering way more food, drink, music and art. Come to Texas and find one you love!
