About This Festival

The Krakow Film Music Festival is one of the largest and most renowned events related to film music in the world. Its most recent edition attracted an audience of 35,000. In the past, it had featured many world-famous composers of film scores, including Oscar winners Hans Zimmer, Elliot Goldenthal, Tan Dun, Howard Shore, Jan A. P. Kaczmarek and Stephen Warbeck. Other illustrious composers who have participated in the Krakow Film Music Festival have been Wojciech Kilar, Alberto Iglesias, Patrick Doyle and many others. The Krakow Film Festival showcases the “Live in Concert” series, which presents feature-length films accompanied by simultaneous live orchestral performances of the entire film score. Meanwhile, gala concerts feature world premiere suites, which are visually illustrated by selected clips of film footage or abstract visuals.
The Krakow Film Music Festival features Master Classes for young composers, workshops for children, panel discussions with filmmakers as well as producers from the industry and outdoor film screenings. During the festival, the Young Talent FMF Award is presented to honour up-and-coming composers. Finalists in the award competition attend Master Classes by professional, experienced film industry experts (including those who have worked in Hollywood) as part of the Audio Visual Forum, a platform for educating young composers. The winner of the competition receives the Young Talent FMF Award. During the finale gala concert, a symphony performs the work of the recipient in front of a large international crowd and world-famous composers.
Another honour bestowed during the Krakow Film Music Festival is the Wojciech Kilar Award. Named after the great composer of film scores, since 2014 it is presented “to outstanding and original film music composers who remain faithful to the traditional art of composition.” The Wojciech Kilar Award was established and is funded by the mayors of Krakow and Katowice. Elliot Goldenthal was its first recipient. As part of the award, composers are given a funded recording session of their next film score with a Polish symphony orchestra.
The Krakow Film Music Festival is a joint undertaken of the Krakow Festival Office and RMF Classic radio station. The next edition will take place on May 24-29, 2016.
