US Music Festivals 2015

Is there anything more tempting than grabbing an open-topped car, a rucksack full of snacks and booze, and heading out across America just to see where you end up? And when you hear about some of the music festivals on offer across the Atlantic, you might well finally find an excuse to make that road trip. USA has an almost mythological history when it comes to music festivals. The story of Woodstock has been told and retold so many times it’s almost become legend. Bob Dylan’s appearance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 is now notorious for his choice to play with an electric guitar. And the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 had a little bit of everything, introducing Otis Redding to white audiences and topped off with Jimi Hendrix setting his guitar on fire during his last performance of “Wild Thing”. A lot of big cultural happenings throughout the twentieth century in America were linked in tightly with music festivals, and that celebration of live music is a tradition that’s firmly survived to this day. There are more music festivals covering more genres that you could count in US at the moment. Basically, whatever weird combination of sounds that you’re into, you’ll find a festival that caters to your tastes. Are you looking for decadent electronica and thousands of fellow fans? Then the Electric Daisy Carnival in Vegas is for you. And if you want to get nostalgic for some good ol’ folk music, the Pittsburgh Folk Festival has been running for almost fifty years. The legendary Monterey Jazz Festival has also been around for decades, and here you can bask in some sweet jazz and likeminded fans from all over the world. Coachella provides somewhere for the good-looking youth types to mingle in the sun and pop music, while the Pitchfork Music Festival offers a great place for Chicago indie fans to chill and hear some new music amongst the hipster types. Globalberquerque brings a taste of music from all over the world to the Southwest, and rock fans can get their thirst quenched by the legendary Warped Tour. Many of these festivals also incorporate another element into the music, such as film, art, or photography, so make sure you’re getting bang for your buck. With as much to do, see, and hear as this, you’ll have a busy year in that hood-down convertible.
